A Century of Service, Song and Connection: Celebrating John’s 100th Birthday

When John Johnston celebrated his 100th birthday, he didn’t simply attend the party. He became the heart of it.

The Centacare FNQ Social Wellbeing Hub at Holloways Beach recently came alive with music, laughter and celebration as friends, family and fellow community members gathered to mark John’s remarkable milestone. The Air Force veteran received what many described as true rockstar treatment, embracing every moment with his trademark warmth, humour and energy.

Born in Gordonvale in February 1926, John was one of six children. At just 20 years old, he enlisted in the Army before beginning a distinguished 22-year career with the Royal Australian Air Force. Working in aircraft maintenance, his service included deployment to Korea and reflected a lifelong commitment to dedication, discipline and community.

While his military career was significant, family has always been at the centre of John’s story. He met his wife June at his brother’s wedding, and the pair married two years later. Together they raised three children and built a family that now spans ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Following June’s passing in 1988, John continued to live with resilience and purpose. Today, he lives with one of his sons and remains a regular visitor to Centacare FNQ’s Social Wellbeing Hub at Holloways Beach, attending each Monday to enjoy lunch, friendship and community connection. One of his favourite routines is a scenic drive along the beach with his daughter Annette.

When asked the secret to reaching 100 years of age, John simply smiled and credited “just luck” and keeping busy. Those who know him well might suggest there is a little more to it than that. His ability to connect with others, his positive outlook and his commitment to staying engaged continue to inspire everyone around him.

Nathan Lee, General Manager Mental Health and Wellbeing at Centacare FNQ, said social connection plays a vital role in supporting older Australians.

“As our population ages, maintaining meaningful connections becomes increasingly important for mental health and overall wellbeing,” he said.

“The Holloways Beach Social Wellbeing Hub provides a welcoming environment where people aged 65 and over can build friendships, stay active and feel valued within their community.”

Beyond the birthday cake and celebrations, John’s milestone offered a powerful reminder of what helps people thrive throughout life. Strong relationships, a sense of belonging and opportunities to stay connected all contribute to wellbeing at every age.

As the celebrations came to a close, John looked around at the many faces that had shared in his journey. It was a moment that reflected not only a century of life, but a century of service, family, resilience and community.

At Centacare FNQ, we are proud to support older Australians through programs that foster connection, friendship and belonging. John’s story is a wonderful example of the difference community can make, and of the rich experiences and wisdom that older generations continue to share.
